eBay listing quality guide: a good eBay listing from Amazon data (photos, item specifics, description, category) (2026)

Of two listings selling the same item at the same price, one sells; the difference is listing quality. Rules for title, photos, category, item specifics, description and mobile view; turning Amazon data into a listing without copying; a ten-point checklist and the flow in Sellerviva.

In this guide

Of two listings selling the same item at the same price, one sells and the other stays on page five; the difference is listing quality. An eBay listing has six parts: title, photos, category, item specifics, description and terms of sale (price, shipping, returns). In dropshipping these parts are derived from Amazon data; copy-paste breaks both quality and policy. This guide covers the rule for each part, how to turn Amazon data into a listing, what eBay looks at when ranking, and common mistakes. Price, shipping and return terms have their own guides.

1. Six parts and their effect

Part What it affects Dropshipping trap
Title Search match, clicks Amazon title 200 characters, eBay 80: don't cut, rebuild
Photos Clicks, conversion, "not as described" Brand images (VeRO), watermarks and text not allowed
Category Visibility, item specifics set, fee rate Wrong category = low impressions and wrong fee
Item specifics Search filters, ranking Empty required specifics lower impressions
Description Conversion, "not as described" Copied Amazon text: wrong variant, brand language
Terms of sale Ranking, conversion Pricing and returns guides

eBay doesn't publish its ranking (Best Match) formula; the principles it does publish are relevance (title, specifics, category), listing performance (sell-through, clicks, conversion), seller performance (handling time, return policy, level), and price plus shipping. Listing quality directly sets the first two.

2. Title: 80 characters

The rules are the same as the eBay Title Builder: at most 80 characters (60–80 is good); order brand + model + product type + key feature + compatibility or size or color; no promotional words ("free shipping", "wow"); no all caps; no special characters or emoji; condition and shipping not in the title but in their own fields. Don't cut the Amazon title: it runs to 200 characters with repetition and marketing phrases; the eBay title is built from the words the buyer types into the search box. Put the variant (color, size, quantity) in the title; a listing that doesn't say "2-pack" is taken as a single item.

3. Photos

  • Count and size: at least one, 8–12 recommended; long side at least 500 pixels, 1600 recommended (zoom becomes available). The main photo on a plain background, with the item filling most of the frame.
  • Not allowed: borders, watermarks, text overlays, collages and images of other items break eBay's picture rules; no "in stock" or "fast shipping" additions on the main photo.
  • The source problem: dropshipping uses the manufacturer's images; the brand owner's copyrighted images are grounds for a VeRO complaint. Risk reduction: use product images, not brand logos and campaign visuals; risk is low on unbranded, functional items (product research §6). The stock photo in the eBay catalog (matched by UPC/EAN on a new item) can be used.
  • Order: 1) main image, 2) another angle, 3) detail and texture, 4) scale (in hand or with a ruler), 5) package contents, 6) in use. In a variant listing, each variant's own image must match; a wrong color image is the top cause of "not as described" returns.
  • Mobile: most buyers look on a phone; square ratio, an item readable as a thumbnail, a plain shadow-free background.

4. Category

  • Compare eBay's suggested category with the category of sold listings; if both agree, it's right. A wrong category doesn't appear in search filters and brings the wrong set of item specifics.
  • The category changes the fee rate: most categories 13.6%, some differ; the eBay Fee Calculator shows the fee by category.
  • A second category costs extra and is rarely needed; one correct category is enough.
  • Enter the UPC/EAN if there is one: it links to the eBay catalog and brings specifics and a stock photo. If the Amazon page has no barcode and the item really has none, pick "Does not apply"; picking it while a barcode exists counts as an incomplete listing.

5. Item specifics

eBay computes search filters and relevance from these fields; if required ones are empty the listing isn't published or loses impressions, and the more recommended ones you fill, the more filters you appear in. The "Technical details" and "Product information" tables on the Amazon page are your source:

Specific Source on Amazon Note
Brand Brand line, "Visit the X store" Unbranded item: "Unbranded"; don't invent a brand
MPN / Model Model number, item model number If none, "Does Not Apply"
Type Category path Pick from eBay's options
Color, size, material Variant selection, technical details Exactly the variant
Compatibility "Compatible with ..." A compatibility list brings searches
Quantity Package contents If "2-pack", 2

If the real value is unknown, don't invent it; a wrong specific is grounds for "not as described". "Unknown" and "Does not apply" only when truly so.

6. Description

  • The first two lines are the summary: on mobile the description is collapsed and the buyer sees the first lines. What it is, who it's for, the key feature.
  • Bullet points: package contents, dimensions, compatibility, material, warranty status; not long paragraphs.
  • Don't copy the Amazon description: brand marketing language, "Prime", "Amazon's Choice", review quotes and another variant's features are misleading and a policy problem. Write in your own sentences from the real features on Amazon.
  • Simple HTML, no active content: eBay wants mobile-friendly listings; no scripts, embedded video or external links; no giant colored text.
  • Shipping, return and payment information belong in their fields, not in the description; a contradiction in the description is grounds for a case.
  • Repricing doesn't touch the description, but when the variant changes, update the description too.

7. Checklist (10 points)

# Question Pass
1 Title 60–80 characters, in brand + model + type + feature order Yes
2 No promotional words, all caps or emoji in the title Yes
3 At least 6 photos, main photo on a plain background, 1600 pixels Yes
4 No watermark, text, collage or brand campaign image in photos Yes
5 Category matches eBay's suggestion and sold listings Yes
6 Required item specifics filled, most recommended ones filled Yes
7 UPC/EAN entered (if any) Yes
8 Variant image and specifics exactly match the variant Yes
9 Original description, first two lines a summary, bulleted Yes
10 Shipping, return and condition in their own fields Yes

8. Common mistakes

  • Cutting the Amazon title at 80 characters: the most important word ends up at the end.
  • Opening a listing with brand images: VeRO complaint, listing removal, account restriction.
  • A single photo: conversion drops, "not as described" rises.
  • Leaving item specifics empty: you don't appear in filters; even the cheapest listing stays invisible.
  • Wrong variant mapping: black ships against a blue listing; return shipping is yours.
  • Shipping and return promises in the description: a case when they contradict the fields.
  • Category "whatever I find": wrong fee rate and wrong filter set.

9. How it works in Sellerviva

  • Add Products: paste an ASIN, Amazon link or barcode; a draft is created; the approval screen shows the source title and category, the title field has an 80-character counter and the description field is editable.
  • Optimize with AI: an AI title and description are generated for every eligible item (1 item = 1 credit); check the output, is the variant and quantity right.
  • Safety check (guard): content that violates policy or needs attention before publishing is flagged on the approval screen; the Risk Center blocks risky items before publishing with the VeRO and brand list.
  • Title builder: in the panel, three title suggestions from product data by ASIN and a check of your own title.
  • Approval flow: a last check before publishing with the title and brand, eligibility and safety check columns.

This guide is general information; eBay's photo, item specifics and ranking principles change; for the exact rule check eBay's current Seller Center pages.
